Abstract
Animal husbandry is a vital component of Indian agriculture, providing employment and income to millions of rural households. Small ruminants, particularly sheep and goats, account for nearly 40% of the national livestock population and play a crucial role in sustaining livelihoods in arid and semi-arid regions. Karnataka ranks third in India’s sheep population, with districts such as Chitradurga and Tumkur serving as major sheep-rearing zones. Sheep farming in these areas provides meat, manure, and steady cash flow, making it an important livelihood source for resource-poor farmers. The present study was undertaken to assess the socio-economic profile and information-seeking patterns of sheep farmers in Chitradurga and Tumkur districts. A total of 120 respondents (60 from each district) were selected purposively, and data were collected using a structured interview schedule. The results revealed that most respondents were middle-aged, maintained medium-sized flocks, and practiced sheep farming primarily as a subsidiary occupation. Education levels varied, with a substantial proportion having only primary schooling, which limited awareness and adoption of recommended management practices. Farmers predominantly relied on personal contacts such as veterinarians, progressive farmers, and neighbours for information, whereas the role of extension personnel and mass media remained comparatively limited. Significant district-wise differences were observed in access to resources and preference for information sources. These findings highlight the need to strengthen extension services, enhance farmer-scientist linkages, and improve access to timely and reliable veterinary information. The study underscores the importance of developing location-specific extension strategies to promote sustainable sheep farming and effective parasite management in Karnataka.
