Harvesting success through oilseed processing: An inspiring journey of an educator to agri-entrepreneur

Poonam Abrol and Ritu Mittal Gupta

Oilseed processing plays a crucial role in enhancing profitability for farmers by adding value to raw crops. Through processing, oilseeds such as mustard and sunflower are transformed into higher-value products like oils, cakes, and other derivatives, which command better prices in the market. This not only increases the overall revenue for farmers but also reduces dependency on raw crop sales, which are often subject to volatile market prices. This case study explores the entrepreneurial journey of S. Harjit Singh, who transitioned from education to successfully establishing an oilseed processing enterprise in Moga, Punjab. Using a case study research method, data were gathered through personal visits to Harjit’s farms and his oilseed processing complex, along with observations of routine activities, working patterns, and enterprise records. Harjit Singh, driven by a desire for self-achievement and community impact, made the strategic decision to shift from teaching to oilseed processing. After conducting market research and receiving technical training from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Moga and Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana, he recognized the untapped potential of oilseed processing, particularly in mustard oil. His venture, Ekam Agro-Food Processing Industry, focused on organic farming and value-added processing of oilseed crops, benefiting local farmers through fair pricing and job creation. The study outlined key challenges, such as Harjit's initial lack of experience, setting up infrastructure, and navigating bureaucratic processes. With technical support in areas like crop production, machinery installation, and market linkages, Harjit successfully grew his oilseed processing business. His commitment to organic practices and innovative products, including oils, flours, and spices, positioned his brand strongly in the market. This research highlighted the significance of oilseed processing as a viable opportunity for rural entrepreneurship.
