The present study entitled “Combining ability studies in field pea (Pisum sativum L.)” was undertaken to estimate the combining ability effects in field to find out superior cross combinations for their further used in variety development. The experimental material comprised of eighteen parents where fourteen were lines (female) and four testers (male) were used with their fifty-six crosses along with four check Punjab-89, LINCOLN, Him palam matar-1, Him palam matar-2. The data were recorded on the characters viz., number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod weight per plant, pod weight. When SCA performance for various characters were consider together, it was observed that hybrid IC-218982 × LINCOLN, IC-209134 × Him palam matar-1, EC-269552 × Him palam matar-1 revealed highest magnitude for most of the character indicating the need for its commercial exploitation for biological yield. Crosses with positive SCA effects for improvement of specific traits like seed yield per plant (IC-219006×LINCOLN, IC-218982×LINCOLN, IC-218984×LINCOLN, IC-209134×Punjab-89. The parents with positive GCA effects for seed yield and biological yield (IC-106905, IC-208327, IC-218982, IC-218984, IC-107455, EC-269311, EC-269414, LINCOLN, Him palam matar-2, and biological yield were found to be the best general combiner for most of the characters studied and can be utilized in further breeding Programme.
