Abstract
Sustainable agriculture demands innovative approaches to enhance crop yields while minimizing environmental impact. Biofertilizers, containing beneficial microorganisms, offer a promising alternative to synthetic fertilizers. By directly analyzing the genetic material of microbial communities within soil and plant rhizospheres, metagenomics provides unprecedented access to the vast and largely unexplored microbial diversity. This approach enables the identification of novel microorganisms with potent plant growth-promoting traits, including nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, and the production of phytohormones. Furthermore, metagenomics facilitates the discovery of genes responsible for these beneficial functions, paving the way for targeted strain selection and genetic engineering. The integration of metagenomics with other cutting-edge technologies, such as synthetic biology and high-throughput screening, holds immense potential for developing next-generation biofertilizers with tailored functionalities and enhanced efficacy. Ultimately, metagenomics-driven biofertilizer development offers a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to address the growing global demand for food while safeguarding the environment.
