Advances in agronomy: The role of geospatial tools in enhancing crop productivity

Nidhi Kundu

Geospatial tools are revolutionizing agronomy by providing precise, data-driven insights to enhance crop productivity and ensure sustainable agricultural practices. This article explores the role of technologies such as GIS, GPS, and remote sensing in addressing modern agricultural challenges, including climate change, resource scarcity, and food security. It highlights the key applications of geospatial tools in precision farming, crop monitoring, resource management, and climate-smart agriculture, supported by case studies like India’s Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Despite their transformative potential, challenges such as high costs, technical expertise requirements, and data integration issues remain barriers to widespread adoption. Looking ahead, the integration of AI, machine learning, and IoT, coupled with supportive policies and initiatives, offers promising solutions for scaling geospatial technologies. The article concludes with a call to action for research, innovation, and policy interventions to unlock the full potential of geospatial tools in agronomy and address global food security challenges.
